Travel Management on the Siuslaw National Forest

We need your help…

To identify which roads and trails are currently being used by off-highway vehicles and all-terrain vehicles. In addition we need to know where your favorite undeveloped, dispersed camp sites are located across the Forest so that they can be included in the analysis.

Why the Forest Service Needs you…

As part of the 2005 Travel Management Rule, the Forest Service wants your input. The rule states that each national forest and grassland must specifically designate all roads, trails and areas open to motor vehicle use.

By mid-2008, the Siuslaw National Forest will decide which roads, trails and areas to designate for motorized use and what type of motorized use should be allowed. Road and trail designations will include class of vehicle and, if appropriate, time of year.

The Forest Service is seeking input from everyone who uses National Forest lands, especially you! Decisions will be made by considering input from you, as well as comments from State, county, tribal and local governments.

How can you help?

If you care about which roads and areas should be open or closed to OHVs and want your voice to be heard, we hope that you’ll take the opportunity to participate in the upcoming public involvement process.

The Siuslaw NF has inventoried and mapped all known motorized routes, areas and dispersed camps. The Forest needs your help to identify and locate on all maps other mototized routes, areas and camps that may have been missed.

Forest maps with known routes, areas and camps will be displayed at Siuslaw NF offices from May 1, 2007 to July 31, 2007. You are invited to add your favorite motorized routes, areas and camps if they’ve been missed.

Why was the Travel Management Rule needed?

Across the USA, OHV users account for 11 to 12 million visits to national forests and grasslands. Proper management of motorized travel is necessary to prevent damage to resources and minimize conflicts between different types of recreational use.
